It is the middle of a sunny summer day.

I'm running down the stairs,
quickly and excitedly,
with my neighbours following me.

We all want to see the wormhole.
It just fell down in the backyard.

There it is,
lying on the ground,
tubular in shape,
as befits its name.

The cracked magnifying glass
which I always carry with me
now comes in very handy,
as I bend down to take a closer look.

Damp soil and castings are strewn beside it,
while earthworms, caterpillars and other creepy-crawlies
swarm around it,
wriggling in a peculiar circular dance.

The overpowering temptation to see
what's inside the wormhole
forces me down onto my belly,
and, after appraising the width of the entrance,
I squeeze my body into it.

Suddenly, the ground gives way,
and I find myself
plunging through the sky.

From up above I catch sight of
the Sun running down the stairs
of an apartment block,
quickly and excitedly,
with its neighbours
Proxima Centauri, Alpha Centauri and Barnard's Star
following it.

They all want to see
what is falling
from the heavens.

Curiouser and curiouser!

As I plummet down,
nerves get the better of me,
and I stain the sky
with a trail of yellow liquid.

And now I am lying safely
on solid ground,
flattening the grass I landed on,
squirting warm tears of relief
all over my body.

Sundogs are running around me,
barking furiously at the bizarre apparition
I must appear to be to them.

The Sun approaches me warily.
It reaches out and pokes me gently
with its solar filament finger.

I remember well the look of
wonder, incredulity, joy
in Sun's eyes,
and the comical expressions of confusion
on the faces of its neighbour stars.

Notes

1) A wormhole is a conjectural region of spacetime that acts as a shortcut and that would allow very quick travel from one part of the universe to another, or possibly provide a link from our Universe to another Universe entirely.

2) Proxima Centauri, Alpha Centauri and Barnard's Star are the three closest neighbouring stars to the Sun.

3) A sundog is an atmospheric phenomenon that appears as bright spots of light in the sky on either side of the Sun.

4) Solar filaments are large energy releases from the Sun that have a finger-like appearance.

"IMPERFECTION OF THINGS REMEMBERED (Inverted Variation)" is a kind of an upside-down and inside-out version of  "REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS IMPERFECT". Everything in this poem (from a certain verse onwards) is an inversion of the previous poem, and the title of this poem is an inversion of the title of the previous poem.
