Volcanic Winter
Young Mary
Artist's statement

Volcanic Winter was made in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein, considered to be the first gothic novel. While Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was writing Frankenstein, Mount Krakatoa erupted, which caused a volcanic winter - a major climate disruption and ensuing crop failure, famine, disease, food riots and looting.

These are mixed media using ink, dust and glue on tiny, hand-abraded nineteenth century photographs. (The middle image is a digital collage composed of details.) Transgressing the boundaries of photography and painting, these works refer to western nations' dark histories and gothic struggles in the context of today's political and ecological upheaval.
